The wooden slabs in this work represent time, and space and the connection with the ancestors.
With each ring marking the passage of time. I apply a tree resin lacquer to the surface, building up the multi-hued layers with raw lacquer, cotton fabric, sawdust, and mud. With each layer, eggshell, mother of pearl, gold and silver leaf, natural pigments, are mixed with lacquer and applied. The layers are left to set before sanding away to achieve the effect I want. Like human memory, some things are preserved, others fade. The final pieces, displayed like pendulum, reflecting the unstoppable flow of time and the delicate balance of nature.
In Vietnam, ancient trees are sacred and serve as connections with our ancestors, and are witness to our deeds and history.
At its heart, my work is about time and space. The swinging pendulum is the passage of time. The representation of planetary system is the universe. Complex, vast.
